Johannesburg, 28 February 2023 – Schools provide a safe environment for pupils to get an education. While educators play a critical role in providing educational and mental wellness support to the students, the community, local municipalities, and the private sector also play a pivotal role in creating a conducive learning environment and to eradicate poverty in our communities.
The Speaker of Council in the City of Joburg, Cllr. Colleen Makhubele said: “As the Speaker of Council, I am humbled and honoured to drive and implement these needs. The decision to work with the private sector is for the benefit of the people and to come together collaboratively to make a change.”
“We have been fortunate enough to visit and assist several regions in the Johannesburg metropolitan municipality. Areas such as Diepsloot and Cosmo City host talented young people. It is, therefore, our responsibility to make the route of their journeys less burdened”, she added.
CCBSA is passionate about creating shared value and supporting education initiatives that drive inclusive economic growth, particularly in the communities in which it operates.
Pirtunia Dhlamini, Public Affairs, Communication and Sustainability Manager in Gauteng, said: “Education is important in eradicating poverty and promoting sustained, inclusive, and equitable economic growth for sustainable development. At CCBSA, we recognise that education is central to the development and improvement of the lives of young people in South Africa, the work of dealing with challenges in our education system cannot rest on government alone.
“We recognise the deep socio-economic issues at play in our country where poverty, unemployment and inequality cause such despair and division in our communities,” she said. “Supporting the educational aspirations of our young people is one way in which we believe we can help turn the tide and create a better future for all in South Africa.”
“To date, we have invested over R8 million to support students in our Host communities through the Study Buddy Fund programme, launched in 2021”. Dhlamini added: “We have assisted 55 deserving young people across communities where CCBSA has operations to access tertiary education. The Fund pays for full tuition, accommodation fees and textbooks”. She concluded: “Collaborating to assist pupils from schools such as Musenga Primary School in Diepsloot and Cosmo Secondary School in Cosmo City with school supplies will help pave the way for them to learn and gain access to higher-learning institutions and education.”
Dhlamini concluded: “At CCBSA, we believe that companies which grow their businesses the right way and are invested in and support the communities in which they operate, creating inclusive and sustainable growth opportunities, will help shape a better-shared future for all.”
